Shark diving Azores

A HOTSPOT FOR UP CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH OCEANIC SHARKS

Many shark species cruise the open ocean but the chances of finding them at any given time are minimal. Fortunately, the Azores are in the migration pathway of some oceanic shark species that cruise the North Atlantic, such as blue shark (Prionace glauca) and shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus).

Shark diving from Faial takes place in bottomless blue water well offshore. A boat ride of approximately 1 hour takes the divers to Condor Bank, a seamount located about 10 miles Southwest of Capelinhos Vulcano.

Whale Watching Azores

WHALE WATCHING IN AZORES - FAIAL 2011
Blue whales have already been sighted by our lookouts and this spring promises to be a very good baleen whales season. In fact this is the time when krill exists in more abundance closer to the islands and the south coast of Faial and Pico islands become a real "sanctuary" for blue whales, fin whales and sei whales.
We have from April until October packages with accommodation in Horta and around Faial Island. Our packages include: transfer from/to Horta airport, accommodation and whale watching trips.

There is a very good variety of accommodations types you can choose from. Hotels, bed and breakfast, apartments, guest houses and rural tourism in traditional Azorean houses are the most common options.
Please feel free to visit our web site or send us an email, if you consider your whale watching scuba diving in azores.

Our whale watching trips are always guided by experienced skippers and biologist that provides all the information about the biology and behaviour of the animals. Before each trip we conduct a detailed briefing about the trip and the cetaceans of the Azores. If you are planing you whale watching trip in azores, please contact us.

We practice responsible whale watching!

Whale Watching Azores 2010

We have started our 2010 whale watching season on the 2nd of April. The first trip was very good. The weather was calm and sunny and we have seen 4 diferent species of cetaceans. The highlight of the trip was a group of Orcas, 3 females and 1 big male.
We have spoted also a group of sperm whales, common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins.

Isolated in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, Faial island is becoming a well known destination for whale watching and scuba
diving. Verdant and tranquil, with beautiful landscapes and an incredible blue ocean, the island remains untouched by mass
tourism. Travel around Faial and discover the beauty of Caldeira and Capelinhos volcano, marvel at the abundance of flowers,
enjoy the panoramic views of Pico and S. Jorge islands or take a day to visit them (only 15 and 60 min. by ferry from Faial).

Dive Info:
Located in the marina of Horta, Faial island, Dive Azores dives some of the best dive sites in the archipelago.
Steep walls, gentle slopes, volcanic arches, seamounts, caves and islets make the azorean underwater scenarios
diverse and unique. The selection of the dive sites is made according to the divers experience and weather conditions.
We also organise diving trips to Pico and S. Jorge islands. All dives are boat dives.
The best season for scuba diving is from June to September, when the weather gets drier and the water temperature
increases. Most of the times you can except clear water with 20-25m visibility.
We advise a 7mm wet or semi-dry suit. For July and August 5mm is enough for most divers.
The marine life in the Azores is diverse and abundant.
Pelagic fishes like tuna, barracudas, jacks, sardines and mackerels are common from June to September.
Manta rays are spotted every year in seamounts during July, August and September.
Morays, stingrays, dusky groupers, comb groupers (unique to Azores and Madeira), wrasses, parrot fishes, trigger fishes,
breams and damselfishes are common in most dives. Caves, rocky crevices and fissures are a good place to find
nudibranches, sponges, molluscs, lobsters and other crustaceans.

1ª Limpeza Subaquática do Monte da Guia / 1st Underwater clean up by Dive Azores

Here you can see some images taken by João Decq in the clean up dive promoted by Dive Azores on the 28/10/2007. 23 people have participated including 16 divers, 5 free divers and 2 skippers. The goal was to remove the trash from a very popular dive site located in the protected area of Monte da Guia.
